Last Monday (the 18th) the Socratic Society had its first trivia challenge! Awww! It was great fun, there were tonnes of interesting (and somewhat amusing) answers which I’m sure I won’t forget in a hurry. A pretty good turnout all in all, around of 20 people, allowing us to form about 4 teams.
Congratulations go to the Solipsists who ended up winning some pretty nifty prizes… 2 bottles of wine, some beer mugs and a mini footy (a list of must-haves for any budding young philosopher…)! The Solipsists (officially) consisted of Jimmy, Tim, Big Dave and Eddie, so congratulations J
The competition was tough, there was even attempted bribery! (Just a little aside to team Candy Collective… water isn’t a great bribe, and neither is stripping… although it was pretty funny.)
The trivia had 3 normal trivia question format answers, a pictures round and a round where teams were awarded points for creativity, which yielded some hilarious results! Some memorable ones included:
Q: how much wood could a wood chuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?
A: (from team Candy Collective): How many yaks could a yakpack pack if a yak pack could pack yaks?
And, who could forget: Q: what is Chuck Norris’ only weakness?
A: (from both the Solipsists and the Trembling Gaytimers): Stephen Cohen.
Needless to say, this reference to the Socractic Society’s token lecturer got both teams full marks. A big thanks to my co-host and quizmaster SocSoc Momma Signe Minja Jørgensen who put in a lot of effort into the preparation and delivery of the fantastic questions, and SocSoc Prez Andrew James Crosbie, who set the more challenging philosophy questions and put up with the dynamic duo on the stage bossing him around the room for most of the night.
If you weren’t there, you missed out! It was lots of fun and quite the experience. Luckily for you, we are in the process of planning more events, the next of which is on the 1st of September, Monday week 6. We are fortunate enough to have convinced Dr Peter Slezak and Dr Brent Madison to participate in our little Monday gatherings in a fun-spirited (possibly a little boozy) debate: “Is there such as thing as philosophy? ” What ever results should at least be interesting!
For a little teaser, the SocSoc will be putting up their introductory arguments on the blog some time early next week or before, so stay tuned! Oh man, I’m getting excited… beer + debating = ??
Also, if you are on the Socratic Society mailing list you should be getting an email soon about an upcoming executive meeting. There are positions on the executive board that need filling! If you are at all interested in what goes on behind the scenes, want to participate in the organising of events, want to contribute ideas on what events you want from your society or just want to sample some of the SocSoc Momma’s delicious baked goods, then come along to Morven Brown 308 at 5pm next Wednesday 26th. It would be great to see you there.
Until then SocSoc bloggers,
